Holocaust

The Term Holocaust means an act of mass destruction and loss of life. An example of Holocaust is when the mass murder of Jews under the German Nazi rule from 1941 until 1945. The Auschwitz concentration camp complex was the largest of its kind during the German Nazi rule. It included three main camps, all of which deployed incarcerated prisoners at forced labor. The SS authorities continuously deployed prisoners at forced labor to expand the physical contours of the camp. The Holocaust in Auschwitz was a horrible mass destruction of Jews. Innocent people were beaten, burned alive, hung, or shot for just being a Jew.

The Author

Elie Wielsel was born in 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. He was fifteen years old when he and his family were deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz. Wiesel went through tremendious agony and horror at an early age, the Nazis offenders took the lives of many of his family members and friends. He is still alive and filled with the memories of the tragedy. The novel Night is a look into the life of Elie Wiesel, the readers get to expirience to a smaller magnitude, what he felt and went through at the hands of the Nazis. I believe Mr. Wiesel wrote his novel so people would never forget the Holocaust. People will always remember the struggle that the Nazis put the Jewish people through.

The symbol of darkness in Night
Elie’s struggle with his faith is a dominant conflict in Night. At the beginning of the work, his faith in God is absolute. When asked why he prays to God, he answers, “Why did I pray? . . . Why did I live? Why did I breathe?” His belief in an omnipotent, benevolent God is unconditional, and he cannot imagine living without faith in a divine power. But this faith is shaken by his experience during the Holocaust. The symbol of darkness is that Elie wants to believe in God but he doesn’t know how because If God was there why was he letting his people suffer and go through a horrible time. The darkness in this picture shows that Elie is wanting to believe in God and the white spot in this picture is showing God reaching out to him.
